THE 111TH Galley Family Reunion

Thanks to all who helped make our reunion a great success this year:  Crissy Theys - (Secretary) who did a lot of set-up and clean-up, greeting, and basket raffles , Keith Galley: (Vice President) who helped us with awards and serving ice cream,  Judy Hagerman (Games coordinator who always has fun games!),  Stuart Smith who dragged all the staples and drink jugs!, Deb Walsh: (President )who provided the history quiz, and set up,  John Galle:( our very distant cousin) who brought a print out of the entire family lines and brought many interesting things to look at on the Galle's of Europe.  and a BIG thanks to all of the family members who came out to support the reunion.  It wouldn't be what it is without family attending!

The 111th Galley Reunion was a huge success with 70 people present. It was held at the Mennonite Campgrounds in Mt. Pleasant Pa.   Everyone ate  lunch in the dinning Hall and spent the afternoon enjoying each others company and getting to know cousins through fun and games which Judy Hagerman prepared.   There was a History Quiz given by Debbie Walsh and the one with the highest score and the lowest score received a coupon for a free Galley book upon it's printing.  There were many other prizes given out by Keith Galley as well as many wonderful baskets raffled off by Crissy Theys.   Later in the afternoon we had an ice cream social and made Sundae's.   We also sang Happy Birthday to Debbie Walsh and Warren Galley who turned 50 this year!

I put up a  group photo website at snapfish where you can go and order photo's and you can also upload any photo's you may have taken at the reunion to share with others.   To view our group photo's or add your own reunion photo's to this site, go to  the link below and  use the code "111th"   You will need to set up an account and password but there are no requirements other than that.

you're invited to join my group room!

Coming the furthest this year was Shelley Macfadden from California.  She is from the Peter branch through his daughter Catherine Washabaugh.  She traveled here with her cousin James (Jay) Flenniken of Utah pictured below.  They had a great time and Jay said he is looking forward to coming next year.

 .

Shelley and Jay visited some of our local cemeteries and reported one that is very over grown and in disarray.   We may consider making this cemetery a family project for next year and do some clean up.

We also had  Ron Galley  from Boynton Beach, FL, Phyllis and Bob Gerber  from Bethesda, MD (Phyllis was the winner of our Galley History contest).  Lora Galley and Dan Galley also came  from Millersville, MD.      The youngest Galley member present was Zachary George They's (awarded an engraved Pewter baby bank)  and the oldest member was once again Byron Luce (awarded the Galley family pride winner, engraved Lion).

Accidental Death or Murder?

Is the Death of Joseph J. Galley a case for the  CSI ?  Recently Scott Novak os Uniontown Pa, contacted me. He and his family have lived in Fayette Co. since the 1760's.  He ran across an obit for Joseph Galley in his great great grandmother's scrap book.  Her name was Sarah Harrison Kefover.   Scott happened to see a photo of Joseph Galley on ebay so he purchased it and contacted me.  I paid him for it and he mailed it along with a copy of the obit.  The story intrigued him because it was such unusual circumstances.   I will write the facts and let you judge what you think happened.

Joseph Galley 3rd Child of Jonathan and  Annie Galley. His wife was Sarah Moser and he had two children, Addie and Mary
                          b. August 20, 1841  d. Jan 2, 1888

Joseph lived in McClellandtown Pa for 11 years.  He was respected and well known.  He owned a Saw and Grist Mill.  The mill was run the old fashioned way with water not electricity.

Joseph and his younger brother Jacob had been grinding all day and Joseph sent him home to ask if the folks had any grists they wanted to grind, that he would do it.

Jacbo left with a load of lumber and was gone about 15 minutes.  Jacob returned to the Mill to find Joseph missing.

Jacob found Joseph's coat floating in the Race near the water wheel and then he saw his brother's body.  The wheel was racing at great speeds.

Jacob stopped the wheel and saw that Joseph was dead so he took a horse to some neighbor's near by for assistance.  They helped him remove the body from the water and found that he was decapitated.

His coat, boots and socks were all off the body when they found him.

Surroundings:  There was a cut out area in the ice ( a pit hollow) where the wheel can revolve. There was an axe used to cut ice out of the way sitting on the ledge.  The bottom and sides of the pit
were also covered in ice.   A stone near the wheel had Joseph's hair and blood on it    The body had very few bruises.

I can find no relationship between the Galley family and this Kefover or Harrison name.  So who was Sarah Harrison to Joseph?

Wm J. Hangston J.P. arrived on the scene and gathered a jury and held an inquest over the remains.  A doctor Cloud gave his assessment and then the jury ruled the death accidental.  The jurers were
C.B. Scott, Daniel Deffenbaugh, Allen Smith, Thos. Schroyer, George McKidowney and Silas Provance

Contacts through Website

Carol Friend just contacted me.  Her father was a Cover and they just ran across  our information after his death.

Our website continues to bring new relatives  and also other Galley/Galle's that are testing to see if they are related.

April Campbell contacted me. She lives in State College Pa and was doing a report on family genealogy when she ran across our website.  She is from the Barbara Galley branch and we are getting updates from her.  It's excited to see people using the internet to find their ancestors and roots.

Evelyn Grace Galle contacted me from Brazil.  Her grandfather migrated from Germany to the southern part of Brazil where many Germans reside and we are trying to find out if there is any connections between our lines. Lucky for her I speak Portuguese!!!  She is a wonderful young lady and I am enjoying getting to know her.

We have also been contacted by a Brian Galle of Michigan who is trying to see if he is related to us as well as a David Galley who came from Italy. We may have some of them taking the DNA test to see where they stand.

Users can search for any member of the Galley family, see their history back into Germany and Switzerland,  make reports or trees on any branch of the family and many other things with this CD.  Users will not be allowed to enter data onto the CD; it is a READ only copy.  You must still send updates and changes to Harry Galley HDGalley@qconline.com or Deborah Walsh  Debau92@sbcglobal.net
This ensures that the genealogy remains pure and that we don't have a bunch of different copies with different things floating around.     You are welcome to enter any of the data we have on the Roots Magic program into your own family programs you might be using.   Basic instructions on how to use the program can be viewed by clicking here here.  Basic Instructions

Verdict give for the cause of death for Joseph Galley: Accidental death by being accidentally caught in the wheel of his saw and grist mill, crushing his skull and killing him instantly.   They supposed that Joseph was in the pit cutting the ice from the wheel when his feet slipped just as one of the arms of the wheel came around. This arm grabbing him, jerked his knee joints asunder and carried him over the wheel and by some means threw him into it.  It is supposed that his head hit the rock and tore the whole head off.   There is no known reason why the coat, boots, and socks were removed.   I still think it's a case for CSI.....
